PROJECT DESCRIPTION
Describe the project you plan to do.
The objective of my project is to re-landscape the Tick Tock Grove of Samaritan Homeless Interim Program (SHIP) in Somerville New Jersey, on existing semi improved land behind its office location at 87 East High Street, Somerville, New Jersey. There have been 2 previous Eagle projects completed on this property. Each has added functionality to the site. This project will add to the previous projects. There is a lot of brush in and around the walk way and sides seen in the attached pictures. Brush and small trees with low overhangs have grown very dense and has become a problem to see what wild life could be living in the back as well as to navigate the property. It also has a few dead trees destroying the natural beauty. As outlined in this second picture one large rotted tree is very close to the main building and is now leaning towards the main building. Many of the branches and the stump is rotting creating a long term hazard to the SHIP facility. It will all be removed by professional service as part of this project. Also many small trees are too low and cause many problems for people who enjoy walking the nature trail. SHIP would like the canopy raised and straightened to about 10 feet high. They also wanted all of the parts that have been cut down and removed to be placed in the back to help the natural habitat being formed. In the back where the natural habitat is growing, there is a fallen tree which needs to be taken out. We will cut it into smaller pieces. SHIP would like that to also help create the natural habitat in the back. Also SHIP would like for us to stake in and chain the picnic tables seen here. This would prevent them from washing away if the area floods. I am planning to remove and move many of the smaller trees to the back to help create the natural habitat. There is so much foliage that is not at the 10 feet mark that is wished by SHIP so we will cut down some branches to raise it. I will remove many of the branches to the back along with much other foliage in the way. After I finish with the foliage over growth, and raising the canopy I will be putting in 3 foot stakes that will then be chained to the picnic tables. This will be done manually using anchoring stakes and chaining the picnic tables to them with padlocks. Finally the remaining stumps will then be leveled and used for a small sitting area. I will also take any left over branches and such and place them in the natural habitat in the back.
What group will benefit from the project? The volunteers of SHIP and the homeless and needy families and individuals of Somerville and its surrounding area, as well as victims of drug dependency and HIV/AIDS, who are unable to obtain assistance from government and private agencies who seek assistance and relief from SHIP.
Name of Organization: Samaritan Homeless Interim Program (SHIP) Telephone: (908) 725-3260 Street Address: 87 East High Street City: Somerville State: New Jersey Zip Code: 08876
My project will be of benefit to the group because:
This project will benefit the clients of the Samaritan Homeless Interim Program by creating a more visible area where SHIP clients get a new feel to the new meditation center. It will increase the canopy which will help with visibility, and create a natural habitat in the back, where you have a more likely chance of seeing wild life.
