We are thrilled to announce the newest addition to SHIP’s fleet, SHIP’s Medical Clinic, which embarked on its maiden voyage on May 12, 2010
SHIP’s Medical Clinic provides assistance to those uninsured seeking general medical needs assessment and care. We seek to help those in need of basic primary care and preventive medical care for conditions including serious infections, cardiovascular disease, metabolic, nutritional, vision, and other medical needs.
Treatment at SHIP’s Medical Clinic is available to people who do not have medical insurance, and have been denied medical care due to social, cultural, language, financial or other reasons. Our clients are homeless, near-homeless, and working poor individuals and families in Somerset County regions, who are unable to obtain assistance from government or private agencies, and are therefore denied the opportunity to receive the basic humane medical attention they need and deserve. Many of the clients in desperate need of help suffer from substance abuse dependency, HIV/AIDS, mental health issues, hunger, old age or isolation.
A team consisting of a volunteer physician and RN’s, BSN and registered nurses provide basic ongoing medical care for the uninsured and homeless at SHIP’s Medical Clinic located at 87 E. High Street in Somerville twice a month. The clinics are held on the 1st and 3rd Wednesdays of each month. They are opened from 12:30 pm and usually continue until the last patient is seen.
We have used SHIP's Mobile Medical Clinic to serve the poor at Saint Joseph's Roman Catholic Church in North Plainfield and hope that one day we will be able to secure the staff and resources to resume that service. I pray that you might consider helping us achieve that goal.

We would also like to thank the many individuals serving as translators during the hours of operation, with up to three translators at each site.
We want to thank Somerset County for providing a bus to help bring those in need in North Plainfield to our Somerville treatment site during its hours of operation. Unfortunately, the bus went to the North Plainfield site three scheduled times and no one showed up to use this service. We have heard from various sources that the predominantly Latino men were unable to come because they were working seasonal jobs. The Latina women expressed a fear of getting on a bus for fear of being taken to a place for deportation. Efforts to assure them that this was not going to happen failed. We hope in the future to resume this service after a period of educating those in need regarding the safety of the process.
